This week, the center for architecture in New York City opened its exhibition of the American Institute of Architects New York Chapter 2011 Design Award winners, which featured 38 projects selected out of 433 by a jury of twelve eminent architects, educators, critics and planners.

Greenwall installation in Phyto Universe

Phyto Universe, an upscale Manhattan salon, had a 2,850 square foot greenwall installed by engineer Laurent Corradi with Plant Wall Design. Before construction, Laurent presented a concept for the digital sequencing or mapping, which dictates what species of plants would go where, and how far apart. “Plants have different textures and shapes, so sequencing is like painting with plants” explains Corradi. I love that quote.

It officially opens to the public on December 17, but you can get a sneak preview of the Lincoln Center’s new public space, the David Rubenstein Auditorium (61 W 62nd St between Central Park West and Columbus Ave; lincolncenter.org; Mon–Fri 8am–10pm; Sat, Sun 9am–10pm; free).
